From the recording Track Zero
There comes a point when you realize that waiting for something to change has become the very thing preventing you from changing.
That's really what “No More Wasted Hours” is about.
Not heartbreak, exactly. Not anger. And certainly not revenge. It's about recognizing that you've invested enough of yourself in something that isn't going anywhere, and that the only person who can finally put an end to it is you.
There's a peculiar kind of freedom in that realization. You stop asking questions you already know the answers to. You stop trying to rescue situations that don't want to be rescued. And, perhaps most importantly, you stop confusing persistence with progress.
The lyrics are deliberately straightforward. No more waiting. No more illusions. No more chasing broken hearts. It's less a declaration against someone else than a promise to yourself.
Written in late 1987, when I was 17, the song opens with a little nod to Jeff Lynne, one of my longtime influences. I've always admired the way he could weave orchestral arrangements into rock music without making either feel out of place. So I decided to borrow a little of that spirit, opening with a sweeping orchestral passage before settling into a warmer, more relaxed arrangement of acoustic and electric guitars, bass, drums, and keyboards. It's my small tip of the hat to a musician whose work I've admired for years.
I like that contrast. The introduction suggests that something momentous is about to happen, but what follows isn't a musical explosion. It's a sense of release. The storm has passed, and there's no particular reason to keep standing out in the rain.
The recurring imagery of storms, sunlight, clouds, and horizons wasn't accidental. Each verse moves a little farther away from what was and a little closer to what might be. And that's why the chorus is so simple.
No more wasted hours. No more wasted dreams.
Sometimes the most important decisions in life don't require an elaborate explanation. They just require you to make them. Of course, deciding to move forward doesn't mean the storms won't return. They probably will. But there's a difference between being caught in a storm and choosing to live in one.
The song ends by repeating “waiting for you,” a final acknowledgment of what has been left behind. And perhaps that's the real point of the whole thing. You can't recover the hours you've already wasted. But you can stop wasting the ones you have left.
Lyrics
No more waiting in the dark,
No distractions.
No more chasing broken hearts.
No more wasting all my time.
I’m stepping from the storm into a new day.
I’ll let the sunlight shine,
Falling on a silver lining.
No more dreaming you’ll decide,
No illusions.
No more waiting by your side.
No more negativity.
I’m putting out the fire.
The future will be alright.
And if the thunder rolls,
Drowning out the voices calling.
No more wasted hours
No more wasted dreams
No more
No more wasted hours
No more wasted dreams
No more
No more wading through your tears.
No pretending.
No more suffering your fears.
They only weigh me down.
I’m breaking through the clouds
Into the daylight.
And if a storm should rise,
I’ll sail into a gold horizon.
No more wasted hours
No more wasted dreams
No more
No more wasted hours
No more wasted dreams
No more
Waiting for you
Waiting for you
Waiting for you
